History of FIFA

Fifa world cup is an international football championship played between men’s international teams. The journey of Fifa world cup officially started in 1928 when Fifa congress decided to organize a world championship. Uruguay was assigned as the first host country. The new era in the world of football began as the first ever Fifa world cup opened in Montevideo on 18th July 1930. This world cup was won by the host country, Uruguay. Since 1930, Fifa world cup is held after every four years except 1942 and 1946, which were canceled because of World War II.

FIFA 2nd world cup was played in Italy and the title of world champion was taken away by the host country. The third world cup was played in France, but this time Italy defending its title, once again won the world cup. Final match of Fifa world cup 2006 Germany was played between Italy and France. Italy, winning this match took away the title of world champion. The host country, Germany won third prize.

Brazil is the most successful team and has won this title five times. Italy (the 2nd most successful team) has won four Fifa world cup titles and is the current champion. Germany has won this title thrice. Argentina and Uruguay both has won fifa world cup twice while England and France won this championship once.

FIFA World Cup 2010

The FIFA world cup 2010 is 19th world cup which is scheduled to be played in South Africa between 11 June and 11 July. It the largest international event ever held in South Africa. South Africa, who had lost the bid in 2006, won the bid to host 2010 world cup defeating Egypt and Morocco. Five African nations took part in this bid. Tunisia withdrew because they wanted to co-host this championship with Libya and co-hosting was not allowed while Libya was rejected because it was not meeting the standard Fifa requirements alone.
 

In FIFA 2010, 32 nations are participating. The world cup will be held in about 10 venues in 9 different cities. Six teams, South Africa, Korea Republic, Korea DPR, Netherlands, Japan and Australia have qualified for this championship. Italy is the defending champion but this time it didn’t qualify automatically.

Great preparations are under progress for this international event. Five new stadiums are to be build. Two of them are practice grounds while three are match venues. Five stadiums are being upgraded. Other than building and upgrading stadiums, South Africa is also focusing on improving the transport facilities. Special measures are taken to ensure the security of local and foreign tourists.
 
FIFA world cup is a great sport’s event to look forward in 2010. Still it’s about one year to go. Now only time will tell that who will go home smiling and who will hope for performing better next time.
