winter olympics vancouver 2010

Winter Olympics is a multi sport event. In these Olympics only winter sports (which are played on ice or snow) are held. International multi sport event special for winter sport was first played in the year 1901 in Sweden. These games were once again organized in the year 1903 and then in year 1905. After 1905 games these winter sports were organized after every four years until 1926.

In Olympics the winter sports were first included in the year 1908. The international Olympics committee (IOC) had decided to include a week with winter sports in 1916 Olympics but this time Olympics were cancelled because of the First World War. In the year 1924 IOC decided to include an international week for winter games in summer Olympics 1924 (held in France).

The special week for winter games proved to be a great success so in the year 1925 IOC decided to create a separate winter Olympic Games and the 1924 Olympics were recognized as the first Winter Olympics. The second Olympics were held in the year 1928. These games were hosted by St. Moritz. This time these games were held from 11 to 19 February. The unfair weather caused significant problems. A few events were officially cancelled without announcing any winners. In these games Sonja Henie from Norway won the figure skating competition at the age of 15 years and became the youngest champion in history of Olympics.

In 1932 winter Olympics were first winter Olympics held outside Europe. These games were held in United States and once again the weather was not much cold during these games. Till mid January it was not enough snow to hold all the events. In these games Eddie Eagan won Gold medal in men’s bobsled event. He had been an Olympic champion in boxing in summer Olympics so he became the first person who had won gold medals in both winter and summer Olympics.

In 1936 the next Winter Olympics games were held in Bavarian town of Garmisch and Partenkirchen. These games were held from 6th to 16th February. After the 1936 games the journey of winter stopped for a while because of the Second World War.

Winter Olympics 2010

Winter Olympics 2010 (officially called 21st winter Olympics) are scheduled to be played from 12th to 28th February in Vancouver, Canada. Vancouver is a coastal city in British Colombia. In 2010 Olympic Games about 5500 athletes from more than 80 nations are taking part. In these games about 7 sports with about 86 events will be held. This is the third Olympics hosted by Canada. Previously Canada had hosted summer Olympics 1976 Montreal and winter Olympics 1988 Calgary.

Canada won the bid to host Winter Olympics 2010 defeating South Korea and Australia. Three main venues are built for these games.. These Olympic Games are the first ever Olympics who’s opening and closing ceremony will be held indoors. Vancouver is the warmest city to host winter Olympics. In the middle of February the temperature of Vancouver is about 4.8 degree Celsius.

Talking about the budget, more than $1.76 billion are being spent on these winter Olympics. Out of which about $580 are spent on the construction of new venues and on upgrading of the older ones. The security budget is about $900. They are also working to improve the transport facilities so the tourists may not face any problems. These great preparations are showing that how much harder they are working and how much concerned they are about the success of these Olympics. People of British Colombia had paid extra taxes for the construction of new venues. I hope these great preparations will bring a lot of success for winter Olympics this time making it the most successful Olympics ever.
